Daily Dose - Solaris 10 License Change

  • submit to reddit
At some point during the Oracle-Sun integration, Solaris 10 had a change in its usage terms which has caused some confusion on tech news sites and blogs.  The change is described in this quote from the licensing terms: "Once you have completed the survey, you will be redirected to the Solaris 10 download page for downloading, and your Entitlement Document will be sent to your registered e-mail address. Please remember, your right to use Solaris acquired as a download is limited to a trial of 90 days, unless you acquire a service contract for the downloaded Software."  In the earlier terms it was possible to keep using Solaris for free past 90 days if you gave Sun a valid email, but now it's not so clear.

iBookstore Info Leaks; Prices Lower Than Amazon
It seems that Apple may have fared better than Amazon in its ebook negotiations with publishers.  A leaked screenshot reveals 27 of the NYT's bestsellers are priced at just $9.99 in Apple's iBookstore.  The project currently has over 30k titles with certain classics (Alice in Wonderland, Tom Sawyer) being available for free.

Spiceworks Desktop Gets Free Virtualization Manament
The Free Network management software provider, Spiceworks, has just released the newest version of Spiceworks IT desktop.  Version 4.6 features new remote inventory and monitoring capabilities for virtual machines.  Spiceworks IT Desktop has been called the "Facebook of IT" because of it's social IT management used to report, monitor, troubleshoot, inventory, and run a help desk for IT networks.

MongoDB 1.4 Production-Ready
The latest release of MongoDB has been "thoroughly vetted" according to the developers.  The testing for the release of MongoDB 1.4 has been tested more rigorously than previous versions because version 1.3 is already in production use by many developers.  1.4 includes enhancements for the server, deployment, replication, and query langauge.  The server now has better concurrency and the ability to create indexes in the background.  There is also better restarting of offline slaves, clock skew fixes, and fast new slaves created from snapshots.

Integrating Terracotta's Web Sessions clustering product with Grails is easy enough to describe in a page or two.  Read about it here.

Info on Solaris 10 license change is misleading... License agreement of Solaris 10 clearly states that 90-day evaluation period is applicable if users choose not* to provide e-mail address. As long as user provides e-mail address, 90-day restriction does not apply. Pasted below is a snippet from license agreement..
The registration process to receive an Entitlement Document is part of the Solaris download process, with the Entitlement Document being returned to you via e-mail. For this reason, YOU MUST PROVIDE A WORKING E-MAIL ADDRESS AS PART OF YOUR SUN DOWNLOAD CENTER ACCOUNT. If you fail to do so, you will not receive an Entitlement Document and will only have the right to evaluate Solaris for 90 days
